Mahale Mountains National Park is one of the well-known safari destinations for chimpanzee safari in Tanzania and the entire East Africa safari region; this national park is found in the Kigoma region, just on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake on earth. There’s no road to this monitored area. All tourists here must use a boat to cross the area since it’s too remote.
Watching this Chimpanzee just close to you is such a good safari experience you can ever imagine; during Chimps tracking, you will be accompanied by a professional chimp tracker from the lodge who will be giving you all the correct information on dos and don’ts. Regarding the time of year you visit, chimps can be up on the rainforest vegetation or on the shore of the lake; your safari guide knows better, and you will be correctly directed.
Sometimes, it can be too difficult to catch up with them, as they might be too active and try to hide from you; it is estimated that up to 1000 chimps inhabit this area. Bird species, colobus monkeys, butterflies, crocodiles, and hippos also live there.
The best way of getting to Mahale Mountain National Park is by flying into Kigoma airstrip and later connecting a boat from the shore of Lake Tanganyika; in Mahale, there are a few luxury lodges like Greystoke Mahale Lodge, Lake Shore Lodge, and Mbali Mbali Mahale Lodge which offers the best safari experiences, some of them may cost between 300$ to 600$ per night per person.
